Equine Rescue

Horses have become our pets - but many end up going thru the cruelty of the slaughterhouse to become dinner in European countries.
I have loved horses all my life. Part of me wonders how anyone could do this to a horse - then I think further and wonder how we humans could do this to any animal. Cattle are killed the same way. There has got to be a better way to end an animals life --- for human consumption.
The fear they experience when they are killed in the slaughter house - horse or other wise, is tremendous. That fear then goes into the meat and then is ingested by the person eating the meat. For this reason alone - it is a good thing to pray over your food. To bless the animal that gave it's life for you and to release the pain and fear from the meat. Bless the animal and ask God to take away any trauma the soul of the animal went thru.

My Commitment to Saving the Horses

I have just acquired, on 7/3/99, a horse that was going to be sent to slaughter - she is the black horse at the bottom of this page. I was given next to no information about her, not even a name - the feed lot owner saw her as a commodity. I got her off of a Web Page and with the help of a wonderful lady named Gail - she runs T.I.E.R. a non-profit Horse Rescue organization. After I bought her and had my vet check her out I found out - she is 16 years old, she is a pure thoroughbred, good body composition - probably did not make the cut for racing. Her upper body muscles are under developed, upper neck muscles lax, probably due to having her head down a lot. Her thyroid has dropped down beside her trachea - but it is not a problem. Her feet look good and her stomach and chest sound good. Her right rear hip is out of place. Probably due to an injury or fall - a chiropractor adjustment should put it back into place.
I have named her Majestic Spirit - Magic for short. She is my first rescue horse - God willing I will help and have more. Magic is actually in pretty good condition compared to some of the rescue horses. I am fortunate to have her. She has a sweet and gentle personality - she stayed at my friends house for two weeks - to make sure she did not have any diseases.
Last Friday night we tried to trailer Magic to the stables but she did not want to get in the trailer. After 5 tries and her getting very nervous, I decided to walk her - it was not far - about 1 - 1 1/2 miles. My friend followed me in her truck. Magic was nervous for about the first 1/2 mile - the dogs and kids and cars did not bother her but she was not sure where she was going. Then she saw two Pintos in their stalls across the street and two Arabs on her side of the street - her head perked up and she settled down - she felt better knowing that there were other horses around. For the next 1/2 mile as we got further away from them she wanted to go back - but I kept her going. When we got to the stables she was amazed - I let her stop and greet some of the other horses. She was a gracious lady. When I put her in her stall - it is about 24' x 24' - she went in and met her five other partners one at a time. Champ is a black Tennessee Walker - and he is definitely in love- she spent about 2 minutes with him and it went well. Sonny in the far right corner only got the once over - not much attention. Toby immediately thought this mare was his - after 20 second she screamed at him and he backed off. Sweetie on the left - the one I was worried about was real nice to Magic - Sweetie is a dominate mare but there were no arguments - Smokey in the back left looked and then backed off after touching noses. So her stable mates seem to be ok with her and she with them. This is GOOD.
Saturday - I put Magic in the big arena to see how she would react. She ran quite a bit - I think she felt good being able to run but got nervous quickly and wanted to go back to her stall. She moves pretty good but the right leg still hurts. I only let her run for about 5 minutes - her front legs started shaking - she is very out of shape. I will work upto a longer time when her muscles get in tone. Later on I had Dan (the cowboy) work on her back - to increase the blood flow to the sore hip. She was nervous but it did a lot of good. He was able to massage out a lot of stress but not get the hip back in place. After working on her we rinsed her down and took her to the ring to hopefully get her to roll. She started running again - he said she was showing us her stuff. I got her to calm down - and when she dropped to roll a semi-truck came by and she did not stay down. Later on in the day I wet her down again to try to get her to roll but she would not do it.
Sunday - I took her near one of the smaller rings and in the shade, I worked on her back. She was not as jumpy but still nervous. After working on her I wet her down and put her in the smaller ring - I stayed in there with her. She ran some - and then rolled only half way. When I decided she was not going to try to roll more I took her out, rinsed her down again and we went for a walk - across the street and up the hill. We only went so far up - my legs and her front legs started shaking so we came back down. She was somewhat anxious but very, very good.
I bought some Weight Gain and she loved it - the first stuff I bought she would not touch - so this is good. I mixed it with her Alfalfa pellets, water and Garlic to keep the fly's off. She loved it and devoured it. She has already put on about 50 pounds and still needs to put on about another 150lbs. She is starting to whinny at me when I come to feed and clean. She is going to be a wonderful friend and buddy when she learns to trust me.

Here is the love of my life - Magic - she is a rescue horse.
She was in a feedlot in So. Calif.
to be sold out of state and probably end up at the slaughter house
- but now she is with me.
This is the before picture - probably taken on 6/23/99 at the feedlot. This is the after picture - 7/24/99

Now three new ones 11/21/99 one with my granddaughter

Now it is May, 2001 Magic is a mom!! Look at all the spots - meet Spirit Shadow
Now it is November, 2003 I am married. We have moved to a ranch and are renting some acreage. We have 52 railings and they are step up so the now 5 horses can move about all day long without being closed up in stalls. Magic has her buddy KitKat. Shadow has two weanling buddies that are PMU babies - Hawk and Jypsi - from Canada - see all the horses & Shadows weanling buddies - Hawk & Jypsi
Here is SpiritShadow's Story, his adopted Aunt – Catalina Maagic and his weaning buddies Greyhawk & JypsiTreasure my PMU babies and of course and update on Magic – she has been with me now for 5 ½ years, it is now December, 2004.
The gang has grown bigger - the babies are 5 years old now - their pasture replanted. But sadly we are down one horse - Magic. She passed on June 2nd 2006 of cardiac arrest, probably a stone that got lodged in her intestine. She was with me for almost 7 years - all the horses miss her as do I.
New pictures as of June '06 - Take a look ;-)
